Adults harbored a derisive affection for the kid...
through the motions of being an adult
—like she’d learned to do from those glamorous, celluloid
dolls and studs that smoked harsh cigarettes and quoted,
”So it goes,” to themselves like a prayer—
but couldn’t justify making an attempt to shake her
awake from the sunken, second-hand dream she walked through….

it seemed rude to renounce...

when she wanted it
and she’d still say no
when he asked for one himself;
so it wasn’t so hard to understand his frustration
No, it wasn’t hard at all—
she was a sunflower that had followed
the wrong kind of lights all her life
and yet didn’t yield to gravity,
didn’t fade in brilliance,
